International Affairs Division

The International Affairs Division (RIA) is the joint platform of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU), alongside its sponsoring associations the DGOOC and the DGU, as well as the Berufsverband für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie (BVOU) on topics with an international relevance.

The RIA sees itself as a platform for the mediation and pooling of diverse contacts on a personal and social level with a view to further developing the transfer of knowledge from the professional societies and the professional association into, and with, international professional and umbrella companies within the framework of strategic partnerships.

The unit's priority tasks are:

  1. Coordination of contacts and activities with international specialist and umbrella companies as well as associations and corresponding members
  2. Information and advice to the boards of the DGOU, DGOOC, DGU and BVOU regarding relevant developments in international orthopaedics and traumatology

  3. Bringing together of the processing of continuing education content and curricula between national societies and professional associations on the one hand and corresponding institutions at a European level on the other (e.g. the UEMS)

Other tasks include coordinating development aid projects, supporting fellowship and exchange programs and supporting scientific projects.

The permanent members of the RIA are:

  • Dr. Johannes Flechtenmacher
  • Prof. Dr. Joachim Grifka
  • Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Günther

  • Prof. Dr. Dieter Wirtz
  • The RIA records the diverse international activities of the DGOU, DGOOC, DGU and BVOU as well as their various working committees and develops a concerted framework in which these activities can be brought together scientifically and organisationally and meaningfully carried out for all partners. Examples include contacts with the European umbrella organisations EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology) and ESTES (European Society for Trauma & Emergency Surgery), as well as other European and international professional societies in China, South America and the USA. As such, the RIA also sees itself as a coordination and contact point for questions relating to exchange and fellowship programmes.
  • In addition to the primary coordination, it is also envisaged that it will be possible in the medium term for contacts with other organisations and companies to be initiated via the RIA and taken up in coordination with the executive boards.
  • An increasingly important task of the RIA will be the coordination of activities of professional societies in the field of continuing education and standardisation content at a European level. On the one hand, it is important to support the development of different continuing education curricula and contents in the specialist field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery from the various sections of the UEMS in the sense of our own continuing education in medical specialists and to support coordination with each other. The aim is to ensure that national interests are represented. On the other hand, the task of observing and possibly modulating activities at a European level with regard to standardisation (DIN/CEN) is increasingly developing, which may well have an influence on our continuing training, which has so far remained in the hands of doctors.
